They are our sisters, neighbors, co-workers and friends.

Potential residents are referred to Shalom House by midstate area human services organizations; the organization does not accept walk-ins or self-referrals. Shalom House clients may stay at the Harrisburg shelter for up to six weeks. While at the shelter, clients receive life skills training, case management and referral services.

In fiscal year 2003, Shalom House provided shelter to more than 250 women and children - including 48 families who were victims of domestic violence.

Of the women who came to Shalom House, 90% were from the Greater Harrisburg area. The average length of stay was 27 days, and those women staying more than two weeks, 85% made significant progress toward a more stable future.

Through programs like Making It and SHARP, Shalom House helps women move toward self-sufficiency, to break the cycle of homelessness. After their six week residency at the shelter, clients may enroll Making It and SHARP , programs which seek to transition clients to self-sufficiency.

In the Making It Program, caseworkers visit former residents of the shelter for up to six months to help the women transition from Shalom House to independence.

Once enrolled in SHARP, caseworkers meet as necessary with a caseload of 20 women enrollees, all of whom are working to cope with chronic mental or physical disabilities. The caseworkers provide transportation, help with moving, can mediate with landlords, and work with enrollees to support the establilshment of a stable, independent lifestyle.
