The Shalom House was recently featured on WHTM ABC 27 News. Through the generosity of Hershock’s Inc. and Musser Home Builders, a badly needed front door was replaced. Staff member Patricia Carpintieri and Jeff Musser are interviewed. A big thank you to WHTM Channel 27, Hershock’s Inc. and Musser Home Builders for a beautiful and secure front door to welcome women and children in need of emergency shelter.

Wrap Up A Brighter Holiday With Shalom House

Written by admin on November 8th, 2009

Holiday traditions and celebrations are almost here! It seems time passes more quickly each year in our busy, hectic lives. Now that an enjoyable summer is over and we move into the bright crisp days of fall, it is time for an early start to planning for the winter holidays.

Many families, groups, and friends of all ages, join Shalom House for holiday gift wrapping. This is a fun and enjoyable holiday activity you can do with family, friends, work associates, classmates, or with a group. You will have the opportunity to meet new people while wrapping gifts for donations to benefit the Shalom House Women’s Shelter.

Shalom House is an Emergency Shelter for Women and Women with Children, located in Harrisburg. Serving over 300 women every year; we provide shelter, food clothing, and personal care products. Most importantly, through intensive case management, we help women rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient. In 2008, we established a new program with the Veterans Administration to house homeless female veterans. Shalom House is the only agency in the State providing this service

If you have not had the opportunity to enjoy this activity, please put it on your list of “must do’s” this year. Holiday Gift Wrapping has been one of our main fundraising activities for 15 plus years. All proceeds directly benefit Shalom House Clients.

YOU can help. Many groups, and families commit to as little as two hours to a whole day of gift wrapping to end the cycle of homelessness. Individuals volunteer for shifts of 2,3 or 4 hours, between the hours of 11:00 AM and 9:00 PM. Some wrap with us several times during the season; we will work with you to find a time or shift to fit your schedule.

The booth is located in Colonial Park Mall by Auntie Anne’s pretzel stand. All supplies are provided.

To sign up please contact Marsha Fortney by email or at her home (545-6494) or (255-2056).

Volunteer Now For Holiday Gift Wrapping

Written by admin on September 27th, 2009

While the start of the 2009 holiday season is a few weeks away, we’re starting to gather volunteers for Shalom House’s gift wrap booth at the Colonial Park Mall. Volunteering is as easy as 1 - 2 - 3.

  1. Figure out which shift works for you, your friends or your group. Shalom House will be at the Colonial Park Mall from Dec. 12 through Dec. 24 wrapping presents for donations. Shifts begin each day at 11 a.m., last for anywhere from two to four hours, and run no later than 9 p.m.
  2. Let us know which day and time works for you or your team. You can schedule one block of a few hours, reserve an entire day. Because all volunteer shifts are scheduled in advance, you have two ways to contact volunteer coordinator Marsha Fortney:
    1. By phone at 545-6494;
    2. By email
  3. Gather your TEAM, confirm your date with the coordinator, and show up willing to work.

Donations gathered through gift wrapping will go towards serving homeless women and children in the midstate.

Shalom House is a proud member of the United Way of the Capital Region.

Cookbooks Still Available

Written by admin on July 3rd, 2009

Cookbooks created by The Hershey Company’s Sensory Group are still available to benefit Shalom House. Every dollar donated does directly to help us serve homeless women and children in central Pennsylvania.

Employees from Hershey’s Sensory Department, a team of experts in tasting and taste perception, created a cookbook with all of their favorite recipes earlier this year. The team sold more than 300 copies of the cookbook. Hershey also donated the cost of printing the cookbook.

All purchase are handled via a secure web page on the PayPal web site. Simply click on the Add To Cart button to start the process. Your next stop will be the Shalom House payment page on the PayPal site where you can change the quantity of your order, or Proceed To Checkout to enter your credit card and shipping information before you finalize the sale.

Thank you.
