Shalom House is pleased to report that its second annual “Wreaths for a Reason” fundraiser and community awareness event held at Strawberry Square on November 15, 16 and 17, was an amazing success with the outstanding effort of our many wonderful supporters. The event raised over $8500 for the shelter, including wreath sales and sponsorships.

One cold day last January, Loida became homeless. With three children under the age of four, she desperately needed a place to stay, and made her way to Shalom House, where the family was welcomed, fed, and given a safe, warm bedroom. But that was only the beginning. Through the Shalom House program, Loida quickly began the hard work it takes to recreate an independent life – looking for a job, child care, health care, and formulating a plan and a budget.

This year, Loida and her daughters will be celebrating the holidays in their own home. In her five-month stay at Shalom House, Loida got the skills and confidence she needed, and she is back on her feet.

Homelessness has complex causes, but rarely is it solely about not having a place to sleep. This is why Shalom House is so vital in our community; it is more than an emergency shelter — it offers women a second chance, a roadmap back to self-sufficiency.
