Superhero Weekend Success! (click for more)

Posted on 2015-05-21 by mrebuck

Superhero Weekend was a concept that was all about celebrating our local heroes. With comic book icons like Superman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, and others wandering the streets of downtown Harrisburg, we could set the stage to remember that there are heroes among us, every day, sometimes unusal heroes at that.

At Shalom House, through our emergency shelter and transitional housing programs, we work with women and children who are faced with taking steps towards a better tomorrow, steps that are often include overcoming a sense of hopelessness, fear, and defeat. Yet, as the steps are taken and goals are achieved, these women and children can and do move forward on their journey to personal independence, realizing that their time with Shalom House was but a stop on their way to restoration.

Supporting these women and children towards that end result cannot be accomplished without the partnership and support of the community.

Superhero Weekend provided the chance to feature the impact of partnership on the mission of Shalom House, in 2015 to include Arts Fest, Heart of Harrisburg Church, The King Center, Partnership for Hope, The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and the Latino Hispanic American Community Center, as well as CREDC, The Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce, LAMAR Advertising, and Kamionka Entertainment among others.

Collectively a goal was to demonstrate The Art & Power of Vision and Partnership - where the coming together as a community provides the opportunity to overcome any and every challenge, which includes issues of homelessness and more as well as intentionally being mindful of the work that is done daily to preserve and protect our city and expanded boundaries, through our First Responders, to serve our children, honoring teachers, and in the spirit of Memorial Day, our military.

$5000 was raised to support Shalom House housing programs throughout event. Equally important, Superhero Weekend was a celebration of our local Super Heroes and a time to begin creating a future through that Power of Vision and Partnership - a future that sees an end to homelessness. We extend our thanks and appreciation to everyone who helped make the first annual SUPERHERO WEEKEND a success!

2016 promises to be bigger, better, Stronger ... Stay tuned!

Our Thanks to Everyone Who Participated in the 2015 Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community (click for more)

Posted on 2015-05-16 by mrebuck

Shalom House was well represented at the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community on May 16. What a fun event!

We were so glad to walk in honor of our special ladies and appreciated that Trina, Virginia, Nikkia, and Joyce were able to walk with us. These women have been on a walk of their own towards independence and a new life. They inspired those of us walking with and for them. To date, we have raised $5671, surpassing last years total funds raised, but we still have a ways to go towards our goal.

Its not too late you can still donate. Heres the link to the Shalom House walk page.
