Emerging Philanthropist Program Awards $5,000 to Shalom House (click for more)
Posted on 2016-10-19 by mrebuck
The Emerging Philanthropist Program (EPP), a partnership between The Foundation for Enhancing Communities and Harrisburg Young Professionals, awarded Shalom House a $5,000 grant for their Partnership for Independence and Positive Mental Health. Shalom House was selected by the 2016 EPP class after an extensive process, which included identifying an area that was of the most need in the local Harrisburg community. The EPP class decided that the recipient nonprofit organization must serve Harrisburg city with programs that provide education and/or reintegration services for diverse populations with behavioral health and addiction needs.
Shalom House's Partnership for Independence and Positive Mental Health is a partnership with Elizabethtown Colleges Occupational Therapy program aimed at addressing the root causes of homelessness, which often includes mental health issues. Occupational Therapists are equipped with a coping skills toolbox that provides them with a variety of techniques to help women address mental and behavioral issues that are a barrier to personal growth and success. These tools are designed to help residents with issues of self-control, negative thoughts and attitudes, and inappropriate responses rooted in emotion and trauma issues.

Mission Team Plants Garden (click for more)
Posted on 2016-05-03 by mrebuck
Our sincere thanks to the mission team from Cleveland, Ohio that helped plant flowers at the garden located at 13th & Market Streets. This project was part of the plan for long-term urban gardening in the Allison Hill community and throughout the city. The plan supports opportunities to teach entrepreneurialism, nutrition, resource management and healthy lifestyles -- all of which serve the mission of Shalom House and those that benefit from our housing programs.
As the day concluded and the students and chaperones headed back to the shelter area, they were stopped by a local businesswoman who was so touched by their efforts, she gave each student a dollar bill -- the total of which was then donated to Shalom House in support of its programs and services.

The Junior League of Harrisburg's Little Black Dress Initiative (click for more)
Posted on 2016-04-25 by mrebuck
April 25-29, 2016 is the Junior League of Harrisburgs first annual Little Black Dress Initiative. Launched in February 2014 by the Junior League of London, the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) is a week-long, social media driven fundraising campaign that uses the iconic LBD to raise awareness about poverty and its effects on women in society. The Junior League of Harrisburg is among some of the first Leagues to bring the project stateside. Participants wear one LBD for five, consecutive days and are encouraged to harness the power of their social media platforms to drive online donations, which are collected through a charitable fundraising site (Click and Pledge). The funds raised make possible the work and mission of the Junior League: promoting voluntary service, developing the potential of women and improving the community.
Our own Executive Director Denise Britton is the honorary Chair of this great event. Funds raised will support their work in helping to serve women, assisting with reaching their level of potential and empowerment. To accomplish that objective, the Junior League partners with agencies, like Shalom House -- and for us, that they are moving towards training up their membership and volunteers to assist with mentoring support for at-risk women, translates into a further expansion of our efforts through partnership and collaboration.

The group went back to their Mechanicsburg offices and challenged themselves to gather needed items to serve women and children in shelter and provide a $3,000 cash contribution in support of the mission.

Come join us at the Krevsky Production Center for Shalom House's Annual Theater Event on Saturday, February 27.
This year's show is Autumn Velocity: Alexandra, a 79-year-old artist in a show down with family over where shell spend her remaining years. In Alexandras corner are her wit, her volcanic passion and the fact that shes barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with enough Molotov cocktails to take out the block. But her children have their own secret weapon: estranged son Chris who returns after 20 years, crawls through Alexandras second floor window and becomes the familys unlikely mediator. No sooner are the words Hi, Mom uttered than the emotional bombs start detonating.
